1850 Monroe, Alabama George is a farmer with real estate valued at 2,000. After a little research I learned that prices of land in 1850 ranged between 3.68 to 21.73 an acre. Let us assume George paid the high prices that would mean he may have owned around 90 or so acres of land. Monroe census is 136 pages and so I only looked at a few pages to see how he compared with his close neighbors in real estate value. Next door Jackson Watson had 100 and on the other side William McWilliams had 300. It seems most people seemed to own around 250-1000 however, I did find one farmer who had 10,000. Living with George is wife Nancy and children Daniel, Frank, Josiah, Sarepta, Susanah and Martha.
