Marshall Family of Burnt Corn, Alabama
George Washington Marshall was the first born of Johnnie and Carlie. He was born March 13, 1914. He attended the local school, Puryearville, where his father was the Principal. He also attended Nichburg Junior High School. When his father brought a car, he became his mother’s driver. At eighteen he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) to help his family during the Great Depression. After leaving the CCC, he married Myra Poindexter. For a while they farmed, but then moved to Moss Pointe, Mississippi where George worked in the shipyard. In 1943, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where George obtained a job at Republic steel and later was promoted to foreman. Myra passed away in March 1949. George then married Dealer Shepard in 1952. George passed away February 22, 1997. He had one daughter, Terrlyn McClammy.
