Johnnie Marshall is the third child of George and Nellie Marshall
Johnnie Marshall was the third child born to Nellie and George Marshall. He joined the Bethany Baptist Church and attended the
local schools. Later he enrolled at Fisk University to complete his secondary education. It has been passed down that he played
baseball for Fisk University. He enrolled at the same time as the renowned singer Roland Hayes. During the summers, Johnnie
worked as railroad car porter to earn money for college. Perhaps he was one of the “Pullman Porters”. He left college in
1913 to marry Carlie Robbins, daughter of Hattie Robbins Dubose.
The oldest child, George Washington, was born to the couple on March 13, 1914, to earn a living for his young family; Johnnie
farmed and taught school at the one room school, called Puryearville in Burnt Corn. Eventually he and Carlie had nine children.
Two of those children died at an early age, Edison Bennett at two, and Frank James at fourteen. Both were accidental deaths.
Johnnie Marshall is reported to have been the Principal of Puryearville school where his kids attended. The oldest son,
John Marshall, attended Fisk University and was certified to teach school and taught in Burnt Corn at the school
known as The Puryearville School. Mary Marshall Tucker of Monroeville is his daughter is also a well known teacher.
Carlie died from complications of child birth in 1930.
Johnnie then married Pauline Watson McMillan in 1932. Six children were born to that union. He began purchasing a farm in the
Lennox Community in Conecuh County in 1937 through a Federal Government program. Johnnie passed away in 1945 at Dr. Carter’s
Hospital in Repton, Alabama from complications following an appendectomy. After his death, the family was not able to keep
the farm.
Johnnie was the father of 15 children, nine with Carlie: George, Bernice, Frank James, Carlie, John Pershing, Edison Bonnette,
Lucille, Mary Louise, Evelyn Blanche and six with Pauline: Judge, Theodore, Willie Edward, Roland, Charles, Ruth.
Johnnie and Carlie had nine children: George Washington, Bernice, Frank James, Carlie, John Pershing, Edison Bonnette, Lucille,
Mary Louise, and Evelyn Blanche.
George Washington Marshall
George Washington Marshall was the first born of Johnnie and Carlie. He was born March 13, 1914. He attended the local school,
Puryearville, where his father was the Principal. He also attended Nichburg Junior High School. When his father brought a car,
he became his mother’s driver. At eighteen he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) to help his family during the Great
Depression. After leaving the CCC, he married Myra Poindexter. For a while they farmed, but then moved to Moss Pointe,
Mississippi where George worked in the shipyard. In 1943, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where George obtained a job at Republic
Steel and later was promoted to foreman. Myra passed away in March 1949. George then married Dealer Shepard in 1952. George
passed away February 22, 1997. He had one daughter, Terrlyn McClammy.
Terrlyn McClammy
Terrlyn McClammy graduated from the public schools in Pensacola, Florida in 1976 and Tuskegee University in the 1980’s, she teaches
fourth grade at Sherwood Elementary in Pensacola, Florida.
Bernice Marshall
Bernice Marshall Johnson was the second child of Johnnie and Carlie. She joined Bethany Baptist church and attended the local
school also the city school in Brewton, Alabama. She married John Henry Johnson and they had two children: Willie Frank and
Johnnie Mae Johnson. Bernice passed away March 1950.
Willie Frank Johnson
Willie Frank Johnson is the son of Bernice Marshall Johnson and John Henry Johnson. Willie Frank married Acie Lee and they had
five children: Victor, Tenna, Renee, Timothy Lee, Frannette and Kevin.
Johnnie Mae Marshall Tate
Johnnie Mae Johnson Tate is the daughter of Bernice Marshall Johnson and John Henry Johnson. She went to live with her aunt Carlie in
Cincinnati after her mother’s death. She later joined her father in Cleveland where she finished high school. She married Joe Tate
and they had four daughters: JoAnn, Lisa, Audrey and Carla. Johnnie May passed away in 1997.

Frank James Marshall
Frank James Marshall was the third of Johnnie and Carlie. Not much is known about him except that he died of an accidental death
at age
fourteen.
Carlie (Lit) Marshall
Carlie (Lit) Marshall, the fourth child of Johnnie and Carlie was born June 28, 1919. She attended the local schools and joined
Bethany Baptist church. At a young age, she married Conner Lett. They were divorced and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and she then
married Jacob Poindexter. They had no children, but they helped raise her sister Bernice’s daughter, Johnnie Mae. She passed
away June 17, 1966.
John Pershing Marshall
John Pershing is the fifth child of Johnnie and Carlie, born January 1923. He joined the Bethany Baptist Church at a very early age.
He graduated from Nichburg Jr., High School and was drafted to serve in World War II before completing graduation requirements at
Southern Normal High School. Returning from the Arm, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He married Regina Jackson and they have two
daughters: Deidra and Susie, In Cleveland, John worked for Ford Motor company as a supervisor and a metallurgist, John retied
from Ford, but has a small construction company and owns significant real estate in Cleveland.
Deitra Marshall
Deidra Marshall is the oldest daughter of John and Regina. She live is employed as a public school teacher. Her daughter, Calista,
has a BA degree in art and works as a graphic artist. Christopher Gaddis is the youngest son of Dietra Marshall Gaddis and is a
college student. David is a rising college senior. Jonathan is a college graduate and is employed in Cleveland.
Susie Marshall is John’s other daughter, she is a college graduate, lives in Cleveland and is employed there.
Edison Bonnette Marshall
Edison Bonnette Marshall was the sixth child of Johnnie and Carlie. I don’t have any information on this child except that
he died at an early age of two years old from an accidental death .
Lucille Marshall Harvey
Lucille, the seventh child born to Johnnie and Carlie. Her mother passed away when she was four, and she along with her sister
Evelyn, went to live with her Aunt Lucille in Brewton, Alabama. She graduated from City Junior High School and southern Normal High
School. She was the first black to attend and graduate Central College, Pella, Iowa, She also earned a Master’s degree from Tuskegee
University in counseling. She married Marshall Harvey and they became the parents of two children: Brenda Marshall and Stephen Cornell.
She taught English at Southern Normal High School and worked as a counselor for Job Corp in Cleveland, Ohio. She served as a counselor
for Upward Bound at Southern Normal and was Director when she retired.
Brenda Harvey Richie & Nicole Richie
Her daughter Brenda Harvey-Richie is a graduate of Southern Normal High School and Tuskegee University. She married Lionel Richie a
singer of the famed group, The Commodores. They move to Bel-Air, California. They had one adopted child, Nicole, who has been featured
on the reality show “A SimpleLife.” Lionel and Brenda divorced; however, Brenda continues to work in the music industry as a producer
and manager.
Steven Cornell Harvey
Her son, Steven Cornell Harvey is a graduate of Southern Normal High School and Tennessee State University. He also received a degree
in journalism from Auburn University. He works at the Atlanta Journal Constitution as an internet journalist. He is married to
Juanita (Tony) and they have one daughter Moncia.
Mary Louise Marshall Tucker
Mary Louis Marshall-Tucker, the eighth child born to Johnnie and Carlie, was reared by her Aunt Irene Johnson after her mother died.
She graduated from Nichburg Jr. High School; Southern Normal High School; and Troy State University. She taught high school English
and history and ended her career at Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville, Alabama. She married John Abney Tucker on
June 13, 1954. John was an educator who was theprincipal of Rosenwald Junior High School, Monroeville Middle School and Monroeville
Junior High School. Their children are Cynthia, born 1955 and Karen born 1960, Sheryl 1961 and John Kevin, born 1964.
Cynthia Tucker
Cynthia Tucker is a graduate of Monroe County High School, Auburn University, and she spent a year as a Neiman Fellow studying at
Harvard University. Currently, she serves as editorial page editor of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. She was one of three
finalists in the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing.
Karen Tucker
Karen Tucker, is a graduate of Monroe County High School and the
University of Alabama. She served as Vice-President for public relations at Grady Hospital in Atlanta for several years. Currently,
she is employed at the Atlanta High Museum of Art.
Sheryl Tucker Vagguez
Sheryl Tucker is a 1980 graduate of Monroe County High school. She also graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology and the
University of Texas. She is an assistant professor of architecture at Tulane University in New Orleans. She married Jose Vagguez
December 29, 1996. Jose, born in Sabina, Hidalgo, Mexico received his Ph.D from the University of Houston in engineering and works
as an engineer for Bennett and Associates Engineering Firm in New Orleans, Louisiana. They have one daughter, Irene, fifth generation,
born October 18, 1998.
John Kevin Tucker
John Kevin Tucker is a graduate of Monroe County High School, Birmingham Southern College and Cornell University Medical school.
He interned at Massachusetts General and is currently employed as an instructor of nephrology and is an attending physician at
Bingham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also an instructor at Harvard University.
Evelyn Blanche Marshall Woods Watson
Evelyn Blanche Marshall Woods Watson was born January 11, 1929 and passed away July 25, 2000.
Evelyn was the ninth and youngest child of Johnnie and Carlie. She was reared by her aunt Lucille in Brewton after her mother died.
Evelyn graduated from City Junior High School, southern Normal High school and received a bachelor’s degree from Talladega College.
She attended Atlanta University, Louisiana State University and received a master’s degree in counseling from Troy State University.
She married Wilfred Woods and they had three children: twins – Connie and Carol, and John Reginald. She later married Whitney Watson.
Evelyn was a Mathematics and Science Teacher at Southern Normal High School, Brewton. Alabama; science Teacher at Wedgewood High School,
Pensacola Technical High School and Tate High school, Pensacola, Florida; Guidance Counselor, Escambia High School, Pensacola, Florida.
Dr. Connie Elaine Woods Collins
Dr. Connie Elaine Woods Collins (twin) was born May 24, 1957. she graduated from Wooden High School, Pensacola, Florida, Bethune Cookman
College, University of West Florida, and the University of Central Florida. She worked as a Banker, Social Studies Teacher, Dean of
Students, Assistant Principal, and currently a High school Principal. She is married to Edward Collins, Jr. They have two children:

Carol Faye Woods Alexander (twin) was born May 24, 1957. She graduated from Woodham High School, Pensacola, Florida, Tuskegee Institute,
and University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Carol has worked as an English Teacher, Guidance Counselor in the Charlotte Mecklenburg
schools, Charlotte, North Carolina. She is married to State Witherspoon Alexander, III. They have two children: Evelyn N. Alexander,
born October 10, 1981 and State Witherspoon Alexander, IV. Born January 15, 1987.

Rev. John Reginald Woods is a graduate of Pine Forrest High School, Pensacola, Florida. He attended the University of West Florida in
Pensacola, Florida. He works for Amica Mutual Insurance Company, as an Insurance Claims Adjuster in Atlanta, Georgia and is an

He also graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He has five Burger King Franchises and owns several other businesses.
He I married to Avelyn and they have three children: R.J., Peter, and Jennifer. They are the grandparent of three – two boys
and a girl.
Roland Haye Marshall, Jr.
Roland Hayes Marshall, Jr. is the first child born to Roland and Avelyn, graduated from East Western Michigan University. He married
Marilyn Gardner July 11, 1998. He is co-owner and operator of Burger King Restaurants in southwestern Michigan.
Peter Marshall & Family
Peter Marshall, the second son of Roland and Avelyn, graduated from East Lansing High school. He gained early admission at New York
University at stony Brook and graduated from Brown University. He married to Raisa who graduated from East Denver High School, Amherst
College and Columbia University. They have one son, august Wilson. Peter is employed as a software field engineer. They live in

Jennifer Marie Marshall Ledesma
Jennifer Marie Marshall Ledesma is the daughter of Roland and Avelyn. She graduated from East Lansing High School and Lansing Community
College. She married Juan Ledesma and they have two children: Morgan Marie and Juan Dadico. Jennie is head of payroll and the human
resources department in her father and brothers’ business.

Ruth Jeanette Marshall Reed
Ruth Jeanette Marshall Reed was the sixth and last child born to Pauline and Johnnie on November 27, 1944. She attended Burnt Corn Jr.
High School, in Burnt Corn, Alabama, John Adams High School, Jane Addams school of Practical Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio. She received a
degree in Applied Science in nursing from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. She is married to Clarence Reed, Sr. Ruth is
the Owner and Director of Ru-Clare adult Day Care Centers, Beachwood, Ohio. They have two children: Clarence Darryll Reed, Jr. and
Khendra Michelle Reed.
