Samuel Puryear


Samuel Puryear was a slave trader and a slave owner in Virginia and he is the father of Mariah Puryear. Mariah is matriarch of the Watson Family. Samuel Puryear fathered and owned Mariah until she was around 10 or 11 years old when he transferred of her ownership to his daughter Jane. Jane did not have Mariah long before she was deeded to her brother Alexander Puryear along a horse bridle and a saddle. Alexander was maintained ownership of Mariah and was in his will to his wife after his death around 1851. There is no record that Mariah was every sold but was always property of Alexander Puryear. Records suggest that the Puryear's were notorious slave traders and he eventfully settled in Burnt Corn, Alabama but keep Mariah as his personal property. Mariah had a son named Prince Albert Puryear who is the father of Victoria Puryear-Watson. Victoria married William "Bill" Watson. Samuel Puryear is believed to be a slave owner or slave trader out Virginia who with an Unknown Slave woman, circa 1835, give birth to Mariah Puryear who is the Mother and Matriarch of the African American Watson Family of Burnt Corn, Alabama
