D.M. O'Brien
D.M. O'Brien was a teacher at the Burnt Corn Male Academy (Student Retreat) which was the first public school in Burnt Corn and Conecuh County. He was married to Nancy Clingham who was the daughter of Francis "Frank" Clingham was the owner of the Burnt Corn Boarding House. Fannie Lee worked for the Board House as a slave. Fannie's slave owner, Enoch Salter rented her out as a slave to the Clinghams. She stays on as an employee after slaves were freed.D.M. O'Brien was a typical Irishman and he and Nancy had two girls, Mary and Bettie who as children taught Fannie Lee's daughter Nellie to read, write and do math. Nellie uses that knowledge to pass a teacher exam and became a teacher.
